Public charities typically get most of their funds from the public as well as from government and private foundations. You can find local ones by tracking the funders of locally announced grants. They will also show up in searches at Foundation Directory Online Free.

Government Grants

Grants.gov is THE central source of all federal grants and grant announcements. Updated daily, it is managed by the Department of Health and Humans Services. It provides extensive search capabilities and offers a system that will alert you to new grants in your area.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) provides a full listing of all Federal programs available to State and local governments, currently including about 3000 assistance programs. It includes the District of Columbia along with federally-recognized Indian tribal governments; Territories (and possessions) of the United States; domestic public, quasi- public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals.

Philanthropic Archives

The Chronicle of Philanthropy refers to itself as the  “No. 1 news source, in print and online, for nonprofit leaders, fund raisers, grant makers, and other people involved in the philanthropic enterprise.” Free accounts are available.
